Why Mouse Studies Don't Always Translate to Humans
Mice are powerful biological models, but similarity is selective—not complete.
Why use mice?
Researchers can control genes, environment and timing, sample tissues directly and test mechanisms that would be unethical in people.
Where translation breaks
Dose, metabolism, lifespan, immune response, disease induction and laboratory environment can all differ sharply from human disease.
The right conclusion
A mouse experiment can establish a mechanism in mice and justify further testing. It should not be reported as a human cure or treatment recommendation.
A practical reading checklist
- Was the disease naturally occurring or induced?
- Were both sexes studied?
- Was the intervention given before or after disease began?
- Is there supporting human evidence?
